STEPS TO DEVELOPING A WEBSITE

We created this guide to assist everyone in understanding what it will take to build a website and the various aspects and phases of web development. This will help you choose the best options for your business as well as know what to expect and will be needed going forward.

There are 6 phases of the process from the beginning until the initial site launch. They are:

Step 1: Project Definition & Planning
Step 2: Project Preparation
Step 3: Website Design
Step 4: Website Development
Step 5: Website Testing
Step 6: Website Deployment

Step 1: Project Definition & Planning

First, think about what you want your website to include and do when people visit it and identify your website goals. Consider questions such as' what do you want your website to accomplish for your business? Will it be strictly informational, promotional, or is your goal to leverage your website to generate leads to increase profits and growth? Do you intend on selling products, or promoting services that you offer? Other questions to consider are, who will be the targeted market of the website? What are the intended benefits that users will get from your website, or use of your products and or services? Taking a few moments to define these things now will give you a sense of direction to your project. The answers to these questions will also help answer more upcoming questions like; What pages of content do you think that you will need your website to have? What features would you like it to have? This defining and planning phase is important because it starts the process and will also help you communicate to us exactly what is needed.

Step 2: Project Preparation

Content

Now that you’ve determined your website goals and your likely audience, next consider what information and content that you want your website to have. What pages / sections will need to be included in the initial construction? (BTW, It's usually a good idea is to create an outline or list to have as a reference to use as needed going forward.) Regarding page content, do you have things such as photos of your products and/or services? How about a copy of your logo (or do you need us to create one?)

You will need textual content to provide details and info for use in the various sections of your website. This is something that we can help you with. What works best is to combine your details and information with our search engine optimization skills to come up with keyword rich content. This way, you provide visitors with info AND maximize potential search results at the same time.

A Domain Name

You will need to register a domain name for your website. Do you have a certain domain name that you've decided on? Have you checked to see if it is available or have you registered it yet? For domain registrations we recommend Namecheap (located at: namecheap.com). They are cheaper than most, offer free-for-life private registration (something nearly all others charge for and it keeps spam out of your mailbox) and they don't shove upsell items into your shopping cart like others do. You can visit their website anytime to see what is available.

A Hosting Provider

A hosting provider is very similar to a storage rental landlord. You pay them to store your website files on a special type of computer, known as a web server, which is used to display them worldwide 24/7/365.

Hosting services are pretty inexpensive. A hosting provider that we highly recommend is scalahosting.com because they are a "most bang for the buck" provider that we've used for a few years now without any issues. Their "WP START" package (which you can find located in their menu under WordPress Hosting) has practically everything that is needed from a host and it includes things such as extra security features, automated backups, and also, free email accounts. Many others will charge additionally for these things. If you pay yearly, the cost comes out to only $5.95 a month.

We will be glad to assist you with setup if you need us to, just let us know. BTW, here are links to the hosting provider and domain registration company that we mentioned.

Step 3: Website Design

In this phase, we will now talk more about color schemes, graphics, and the overall look. It's important to take into consideration the target audience and your branding needs to "best match" the look and feel. This phase is when we need to talk to establish a good idea of what you want to see. After discussing these things, we will begin the core construction demos. Then once we have determined a design that you are happy with, we will then proceed to the development phase.

Step 4: Website Development

In this phase we will begin to structure your site in a systematic manner so that it will begin to take shape and look appealing. By the way, you will be able to view your project throughout the design and development stages. As we progress we will contact you to get your input and ideas then continue on until we have a design that you love. Other than insuring that we have the content needed and communicating, you can sit back and relax.

Step 5: Website Testing

Good news! There's not much for you to do in this phase, it's practically all on us. The main thing that we will need you to do is simply review and discuss the edits and updates made as we go forward so that we will literally be on the same page(s). This phase is where we test various aspects such as code functionality, security, do an initial SEO analysis and check to insure that each are functioning properly. In this phase, we will also make revisions that you may want done. During this phase we will take care of the final steps needed before launch.

Step 6: Website Deployment

Tada! This phase is when the initial construction has been completed and it's time to go fully live! Now it's time to tell your friends, begin the internet marketing campaigns, and share the site on social media.
